The best I can

I’ve come to accept that
at times I fail,
as I walk along
this beaten trail.
For a few years
not much has gone my way.
I guess I’ll just have to believe
that it will one day.
Even though my life is
not yet half through,
I’ve made some mistakes-
I’ve paid some dues.
This path is tough,
and that’s a fact.
Some days I don’t want to move ahead,
but I never want to look back.
The times I’ve wanted to stop walking,
good friends helped me through it all,
and I’ll always be there to catch them
if they should ever fall.
I’ve been hurt so deeply,
but I’ve wounded as well.
It’s just a part of life
as far as I can tell.
I’ll try to do the best I can.
I’ll leave it up to fate.
Then I’ll pray I did good enough
to pass through that pearly gate.
